RAIFFA / TECHNICAL NOTE

Reassessing plans after conditions change

RAIFFA analyzes how new information affects assumptions and comparisons.

01

Connect new information to the conditions it affects.

An additional document does not necessarily require every alternative to be reviewed from the beginning. First examine whether it affects a premise, resource, or scheduling constraint. The review differs if the information is unrelated, changes only one alternative, or changes a common criterion.

By keeping conditions distinct, RAIFFA supports examining which evidence can change the comparison. If the availability of a required resource changes, revisit the alternative that depended on it. Review the reasoning built on that value as well as the value itself.

02

Retain the earlier comparison and the reason for the difference.

It matters which information supported an earlier review. Distinguish a changed decision question from a new candidate or a revised assumption. Simply overwriting the previous conclusion makes it harder to separate the reasoning available at the time from conditions that changed later.

Re-review can set out the new evidence, affected conditions, and questions to revisit for each alternative. It also distinguishes planned tests from completed tests. Creating a new test plan does not mean the result is already available for the comparison.

03

Focus further investigation on information that could change the choice.

Treating every uncertainty as equally important can create an unlimited list of checks. Examining which information would alter an alternative’s viable conditions helps explain which document, measurement, or test deserves further attention. The proposed investigation stays connected to an open question in the comparison.

Re-review in RAIFFA does not automatically choose a different final alternative. It restructures the evidence and remaining conditions so the responsible person can reconsider the choice. Changing external work still requires the authority and process appropriate to that work.
